Hibernation

Hibernation is a liminal archive of trans dreams and histories; a place to do nothing; a collection of mundane utopias.

Drawing from personal and community trans archives, Hibernation asks: what do trans people dream about? How do we archive ourselves? How is being trans connected to the act of dreaming?

Transness is often depicted through the metaphor of a butterfly. But what are the dreams dreamt within the perceived stillness of the cocoon, when everything is gooey and fluid (and who says it ends when it’s time to hatch)?

Hibernation is open for 5 hours per day. The working group welcomes guests to come and go as they please, each at their own pace. There are archives, narratives, time loops and time hiccups to explore, add into, touch, and spend time with. There are comfortable spaces for resting and listening and being, without a need to rush to the next thing. There might be a ghost; after all, most dreams are a little bit haunted.

The m2f2m collective was founded in 2019 by artists Frank Stankiewicz, Miranda Kastemaa and Mira Eskelinen out of a shared desire to bring together trans artists with different backgrounds and skills, and to create much-needed space for showcasing experimental trans art.

Frank is a writer and artist, creating mostly using words, games, play, and humour to talk about grief, joy, non-linear time, dreams, and bodies. currently interested in collective and personal archives, questions related to agency in storytelling, and mundane memory collection.

Miranda (they/she) is a musician and sound designer working with algorithms, electronics and acoustics to build musical-visual instruments, interactive installations and participatory performances.

Mira (she/her) is a writer, performer and professional artistic enabler. She’s fascinated by temporary communities, and dreams of creating more and more platforms and playgrounds for trans and queer artists.

Hibernation is part of Kulkue, a joint project between three Finnish art festivals. ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival (Kuopio), Hangö Teaterträff (Hanko), and Baltic Circle (Helsinki) create an exceptionally large-scale series of Finnish co-productions along with related tours. The project’s central goal is to promote the accessibility of the festivals and to prolong the life cycle of the performances. The project is financed by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
